What Do You Stand For As a Parent?

Do you agree that practicing the right behavior as a parent is imperative to help your kids grow into responsible adults? If you choose to raise your child into a person of integrity, preaching alone will not give you the results you expect. Rather, be the example they can look up to and follow. When doing what is right is a family value, children get a clear idea about what you believe in, the virtues you’ve embraced, as well as the difference between right and wrong. To guide and lead our children on the right path is our moral responsibility.

It is important that you’re able to explain to your child, the reason behind what you stand for and what you won’t stand for. It is necessary that you are able to show your child, the principles behind your behavior. If as a parent, one says, ‘Do what I say, not what I do’ do you think your children will blindly accept all that you say without a question and grow into people of integrity and responsibility?

It is not only kids who must know the difference between right and wrong behavior, but parents too. Because, it is from the parents, that the kids absorb family values and principles since their childhood and it has an impact in shaping their personality and character.

Many a time, it is crucial to contemplate your way of handling life and take a moment to self-reflect, which could help you deal better with situations or relationships. Here is a blog post focused on self-reflection: A moment of self-reflection.

Your role as a parent

The values you wish to inculcate in your children should reflect in your behavior so that your kids are aware of these values very early in life. The role of parents in the personality development of children is significant compared to other factors that influence their personality traits. We all know that there is not one right way to raise a child. But, it is also true that, as a parent, you must be willing to learn and grow in life, to contribute positively to your child’s growth and personality development.

Your attitude towards discipline, eating habits, the well-being of your family, and experiences in life, affect your children. The actions of parents directly impact the behavior of children, as it is natural for kids to observe and emulate what parents do. Your lifestyle, way of treating people, your reaction to people or situations, and your common behavior definitely and intensely influence the mind of your little one, who is learning to embrace and live life, based on how parents do it.

No matter how much you try to correct your children for wrong behavior, repetition of the behavior would be natural and frequent if it has been learned from parents. This is one of the reasons, why punishment alone can’t change a child’s behavior for a lifetime. Working on your behavior and being firm with certain rules contributes to directing your kids toward a path of self-discipline.

This video has basic ideas for keeping your family united with simple gestures and rules: What keeps families together?

These are some parenting mistakes that are better avoided

  • Being inconsistent with rules and discipline
  • Giving in to your kid’s demands without setting limits
  • Arguing with kids and yelling instead of handling the behavior with firm limits
  • Failing to lead by example and expecting children to show positive behavior
  • Handling all your kid’s problems by yourself and not letting your child navigate through challenges

Have you set the right example for your children or do you prefer teaching them something that you are not able to follow in life?

    Thank you!
    I agree with your comment.
It’s so important to set an example rather than merely teaching.
